Tame a Wolf
Everything so far, you've done alone. Time to change that. A wolf you've tamed trots along with you, sits when you ask, and piles into any fight on your side. Your first real friend in the world.
Find a wolf
Wolves are grey, about knee-height, and wander on their own like the other animals. Look in:
- Forest and Taiga — your best bet, there are plenty
- Snowy Tundra — a few about
They're as tough as you are, and they won't bother you — they just pad around.
Get some bones
You tame a wolf by feeding it Bones. Bones drop from:
- Bears and Hyenas — the night-time nasties, and your richest source
- Cows, pigs and sheep — every so often (about one kill in eight)
Bring a few, because taming isn't a sure thing on the first go.
Win it over
Hold a Bone and right-click the wolf. Each try has about a one-in-three chance of working — and the bone is used up whether it works or not, so don't be put off if it takes a couple. Keep at it.
When it works you'll see "Tamed! The wolf is yours." — and that's that, it's bonded to you for keeps. The game even remembers it's yours after you save and come back.
What your wolf does
The moment it's tamed, your wolf sticks close — trotting a few blocks behind and catching up if it falls back. From then on:
- It fights what you fight. Swing at a Bear and your wolf wades in too.
- It defends you. If something hits you, your wolf goes straight after whatever did it.
- Tell it to wait — right-click your own wolf to make it Sit. A sitting wolf stays put no matter how far you wander. Right-click again to call it back up.
Look after it
A tamed wolf is loss, not loot — if it's killed it drops nothing, and you've lost a friend. So don't lead it into a fight it can't win, and let it sit somewhere safe when you're off doing something dangerous.
🎉 You did it
You've got a companion. The world feels a lot less lonely — and a fair bit less dangerous — with a wolf at your heel.
